BACKGROUND
On January 30, 2024, the European Commission announced an investigation into the potential price-fixing of tires, involving some of the world’s most prominent tire manufacturers. The Commission expressed concerns about manufacturers coordinating prices in the European Economic Area, and shared that some coordinating efforts were possibly made via public communications. The collusion, may have affected the price of new replacement tires for passenger cars, vans, trucks, and buses.
Companies under investigation include:
- Michelin
- Continental
- Goodyear
- Bridgestone
- Nokian Tyres
- Pirelli
The United States is one of the largest markets for rubber tires in the world.
According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, domestic tire manufacturing has an annual economic footprint of approximately $170 billion, supporting over 801,000 jobs nationwide -- the listed companies being among the industry's largest contributors. It is also estimated that between 2021 and 2022, the U.S imported approximately $16-$19 billion of rubber tires.
