Best Lawyers lists are compiled via exhaustive peer-reviewed surveys of thousands of leading lawyers. For the Best Lawyers category, this year’s honorees include 81,620 lawyers across 151 practice areas and 203 geographic regions. As for Ones to Watch, the 2027 class includes 25,052 lawyers from 2,409 firms across 79 practice areas and 199 geographic regions. Only about 2% of early-career attorneys in the United States receive this honor.

Best Lawyers was founded in 1981 with the purpose of highlighting the extraordinary accomplishments of those in the legal profession. The process begins when attorneys are nominated for consideration. They are then divided by geographic region and practice areas and are evaluated by their peers on the basis of professional expertise. Those who receive high peer reviews undergo an authentication process to make sure they are currently practicing and in good standing. If the votes for a lawyer are positive enough for recognition in The Best Lawyers in America, that lawyer must maintain those votes in subsequent polls to remain in each edition.
